Review: The Bell at Skenfrith, midweek

Castle first, then the dining room. Two courses from about £40 before wine.

Skenfrith Castle beside the inn

Skenfrith is a detour even from Abergavenny, which is part of why it works. The kitchen is better than the drive suggests, and quieter midweek than the Saturday reviews imply. We had the hake, a pink fir salad, and a tart that had actually seen fruit. Service was brisk, not precious. Two courses land north of £40 before wine. Worth it if the castle walk is part of the afternoon.
