No new M4 — Junction 28 and Magor works are what is funded

Welsh Government restated the motorway is off the table. Junction 28 and Magor stay in the capital programme.

The A465 Heads of the Valleys through Gwent

A written statement on Friday repeated that the M4 relief motorway will not be revived in this Senedd. What is funded: Junction 28 (Tredegar Park) signal and merge work, 2027–28; Magor to Coldra lighting and barrier replacement this winter; and the Newport station walking route, already in Network Rail’s CP7. Nothing south of the Usk that was in the old black route.

If you drive the Brynglas tunnels at peak, this does not shorten the queue. It does mean the cones at 28 are a real scheme with a year, not a rumour.

Welsh Government written statement, 22 August 2026.
