The River Usk running through Newport

Cabinet said yes to detailed design on the east-bank Usk defence. Next 14 months: £4.1m, already in the capital programme. Opposition wanted to wait for NRW’s winter model. They lost. This is not diggers-on-site. It is the last planning step before a business case to Cardiff in spring.

What you will actually see: trial pits from the week of 6 October between Corporation Road and the city footbridge, weekdays 8–5, no nights. Drop-in at Maindee library 17 September. Four hundred addresses sat in the warning area in 2020 and 2023. If you park on that bank, put it in the diary.
